Cord Of Wood

By entering the dimensions of your firewood stack, this calculator will tell you how many cords you have.

Bulk firewood for home heating is usually sold in several forms of measurement, but in many locations, the only legal firewood measurement is by the cord or fraction of a cord. A cord of wood is 128 cubic feet of tightly stacked wood. This comes from the common dimension of 4 foot x 4 foot x 8 foot. In some parts of the country, you will see firewood for sale by the rick or face cord, and lately I have been hearing about firewood being sold as a firewood cord. Of these measurements, a cord of wood is the only one that is an exact quantity.

To calculate the volume of firewood you have, you simply multiply the length, width and height of the stack and divide that by 128.  It is easy to figure out how many cords of firewood you have if the wood is neatly stacked in uniform stacks with square corners. If not, you will have to do some estimating of the dimensions.

Cord Of Wood Dimensions

Cord = length x height x width divided by 128

The common cord dimension is 4’x4’x8′. But any dimensions that add up to 128 cubic feet will be a full cord. The common 4x4x8 dimension is based on 3 stacks 8 feet long and 4 feet high. Since standard firewood length is 16 inches, 3 stacks side by side is 4 feet wide. If you have one long stack, a cord would be 4 feet high and 24 feet long, based on 16 inch long pieces. If you have other lengths of pieces and different heights than 4 feet, it’s still easy to figure the cord of wood dimensions. 4′ 8′ and 16″ just make it easier since they factor nicely into 128.

What Is a Rick Of Wood and A Face Cord?

In many locations, firewood is sold by the rick or face cord. A rick of wood is typically considered to be a stack of firewood 4 feet tall and 8 feet long. There are different opinions about what these measurements are. This is one of the reasons why you have to be careful when buying wood by these measurements. Another problem is, the amount of actual volume in these measurements will vary depending on the length of the firewood pieces. A stack of wood with long pieces will be more wood than a stack with short pieces.

I am not sure what a fireplace cord is. As a consumer, the best option is to buy wood by the cord since it is an exact measurement. Just make sure the sellers dimensions add up to a full cord.
